For many people the idea of a perfect holiday is fine dining, leisurely cocktails and complete relaxation. Other people yawn at the mere thought of this ideal, and would rather be out there exploring, getting fit, and working up a sweat - for those of you out there, we have put together this list of the top ten active things to do in Singapore.
Particularly unique to Singapore, are the areas of preserved rainforest which once covered the island. Today these nature reserves are the perfect place to escape to and indulge in some light exercise. Number one on our list, the MacRitchie Reservoir Park is hugely popular with trekkers, cyclists, runners and canoeists at weekends, and is home to the excellent HSBC Treetop Walk, the highlight of a 12km trek through the rainforest, and which gives you a birds-eye view of the rainforest canopy.
The Bukit Timah Nature Reserve gives you the opportunity to climb Singapore's highest hill (admittedly rather tame at 165m), Pulau Ubin provides cyclists with plenty of trails through the rainforest, and Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve is a haven for bird-spotters and those hoping to catch a glimpse of a crocodile. All of these reserves are well set-up with signposted trails and visitor facilities, and you are almost guaranteed some sort of wildlife viewing, be it Long-Tailed Macaques, Monitor Lizards, Turtles or a variety of brightly-coloured birds, butterflies and insects.
For those who prefer more adrenaline associated with their activity, then check out Sentosa's MegaZip Adventure Park - Asia's most extreme zip line experience and high rope's adventure course, the East Coast's Ski 360 wakeboard park, or kids favourite, the Sentosa Luge.
