• Started by an American expatriate, this local chain has brought hearty American food to the residential areas of Singapore. "Damn good food at a damn good price" is the motto of Botak Jones Restaurant, and they certainly deliver on that promise with high-quality burgers (chicken, beef, or veggie), hot dogs, Tex-Mex chili, Cajun gumbo and sandwiches accompanied by fresh sides like spicy fries or corn on the cob. The portions are very generous and, unless you're ordering a steak, most meals cost less than SGD10. There are more than 10 Botak Jones locations across Singapore, including some certified Halal outlets, but tourists will probably find the alfresco location at the Orchard Road Skate Park the most convenient. -Tanya Procyshyn
