1st of all..Welcome to Singapore.
Secondly, may I know your budget for the stay? We have wide range of Hotel from 2 Stars to 6 Stars hotel in Singapore. Your trip is mainly on what purposes? If for shopping and slight seeing of Singapore, I suggest you put up the hotel in the town area.
2 Days is quite sufficient if you are only for slight seeing and shopping. However, I would suggest you pay a visit to Sentosa Island, and you will require to spend at least 1 day from morning to visit all the tour spot of the island and enjoy great singapore food.

Are you saying that you will be in Singapore for only 2 days? If so there would be quite a limited number of places you can go in that case.
First of all, for accommadation(place to stay), it depends on your budget, how much are you looking at. If you would are looking at cheap and affordable hotels, you can consider hotel 81. They have several branches across Singapore. You can try one particular branch at Chinatown. ---> http://www.hotel81.com.sg/loc_d.shtml
Alternatively, if you dont mind hostels, there is one good one in Orchard Road (The most popular belt of shopping district in Singapore) ---> http://habitat-hostels.com.sg/
For places to go, you can of course go to Orchard road as there aremany shopping centres. But since you will be here only for 2 days? You could consider :
Sentosa Island ---> www.sentosa.com.sg
Mint Museum of Toys ---> www.emint.com (Near Mint museum are popular local food, including Swee Kee Chicken Rice, Bugis Junction Shopping centre and Raffles City Shopping centre)
Singapore Zoological Gardens / Night Safari ---> http://www.zoo.com.sg/ & http://www.nightsafari.com.sg/
These will be places you can conider going in Singapore. Especially if you only have 2 days.
Hoe these information helps. And have a good trip!

2 days is a little short. For that period of time, you can stay at Ibis hotel which is new and cost around S$148/nyt. In 2 days, like the others have mentioned, going around in Orchard Road, shopping in Vivo City which before that you should visit Sentosa which is a day trip by itself.
IF you still have time, you might want to visit the zoo which is a world class zoo. If you club, going to Clark quay could be an experience in itself. Any other places, you can write me ... have a nice trip!

If your budget allows, i would recommend staying at the Novotel hotel on Clarke Quay. It is very modern, great international breakfast and right in the heart of everything, nothing is too far away.
For attractions, you must visit Sentosa, enter by cable car and have fun on the luge. If raining you can visit the National Museum on Stamford Road, all about Singapore history. There is culture to be found around every corner, but try Kampong Glam for muslim/arab stuff and Chinatown and Little India.
Go on the flyer, have a singapore sling in Raffles, go to the zoo, birdpark, marina barrage, there are endless things to do, i could always show you around..................

1)Sentosa - Beaches, chic diners, historical sites, Underwater world (get to touch rays) and the dolphins all on one mini island.
2) The Singapore Zoo - Cageless-concept with entertaining shows by Sea Lions, Elephants and the Polar Bear that serve to educate.
3)Check out the local bands - Timbre (http://timbre.com.sg/) is a good location to start out with, and you can find out more them too!
4) Catch the musical Cats or the national orchestra's performance (usually on a Friday or Sat evening of each week) at the performing arts centre Esplanade (http://esplanade.com.sg/index.jsp for the list of shows and events!)
5) Visit the local SPCA if you are into animals. :) http://spca.org.sg/
6) Have dinner and drinks along Clarke Quay. Wide variety of restaurants of all flavours and pubs/bars/discos located here.
7) If you wish to spend $30 for half an hour on a Ferris Wheel, check out the Singapore Flyer - http://singaporeflyer.com.sg/.

If you are into shopping,
you can stay within thecity and there are lots of chain hotels like www.hotel81.com to check out in various locations in Singapore. Bencoolen is in the heart of town.
If you are an outdoor person, then opt for Sentosa island,you can stay at the various chaltes and air-con huts if you are on a budget. The only difference is that toilets & bathroom are shared facilities in a Hut.Then jump on the bus that takes you to the City and go on the large Singapore Flyer, a giant ferris wheel that lets you take int the sights of Singapore's city skyline.You can also try local fare there or at the nearby Esplanade,Makansutra foodcourt.
