Description:
The neo-Gothic Cathedral of St. Peter the Apostle is enough reason to stop in Dakovo. You'll want to crane your neck to see the church's 84m (275-ft.) twin spires up close after looking at them for an hour or more while approaching the city on the highway from Zagreb. St. Peter the Apostle is the third iteration of a cathedral on this spot, and this one is magnificent. The enormous building was built between 1862 and 1882 by Viennese architect Baron Frederick Schmidt at the behest of Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer. The cathedral's interior is full of fascinating statuary and artistic detail, from frescoes by Alexander and Ludwig Seitz to sculptures by noted Croatian artists of the times. The 19th-century park near the bishop's palace and the Mali (small) park nearby are both protected monuments.
