Getting There
Sorrento is well connected through the Circumvesuviana Railway (Stazione Circumvesuviana on Corso Garibaldi in Naples, off Piazza Garibaldi; tel. 800-053939; www.vesuviana.it), which will take you all the way to Sorrento in about 50 minutes for about 3€ ($4.20/£2.10).
Water travel is our favorite mode of transportation along this coast, and you can easily reach Sorrento by ferry and hydrofoil (though only in the summer season). Linee Marittime Partenopee (tel. 081-55513236), Navigazione Libera del Golfo (tel. 081-5527209), and Linee Lauro (tel. 081-5522838; www.alilauro.it) make daily runs to and from Naples as well as to and from Ischia and Capri; Caremar (tel. 081-5513882; www.caremar.it) offers daily service to and from Capri. Ferries arrive and depart at the Marina Piccola in downtown Sorrento.
SITA (tel. 081-5522176; www.sita-on-line.it) maintains regular bus service between Naples and Sorrento, as well as between Sorrento and Amalfi and Salerno. Curreri Viaggi (tel. 081-8015420) makes seven daily bus runs to Sorrento directly from Naples airport (Capodichino), with stops in Castellammare di Stabia, Vico Equense, Meta, Piano di Sorrento, and Sant'Agnello. The ride to Sorrento takes about 1 hour and costs 6€ ($8.40/£4.20). Note: During the summer, traffic on the coastal road is absolutely abominable and can more than double the regular time.
If Sorrento is your only destination, forget the car -- traffic is chronically bad and, in summer, becomes downright horrible; you can always rent one here should you decide you need one. If you must use a car, take the exit CASTELLAMMARE DI STABIA off autostrada A3, then follow signs for VICO EQUENSE, META DI SORRENTO, and SORRENTO; these will lead you to route SS 145, the Sorrento peninsula's coastal road.
Getting Around
Yellow shuttle buses (tickets 1€/$1.40/70p for 90 min. from tobacconists and newsstands) connect the harbor with Piazza Tasso in the center of town and with the Circumvesuviana Railroad station. Taxi stands can be found at the harbor (tel. 081-8783527), on Piazza Tasso (tel. 081-8782204), and in the adjacent village of Sant'Agnello (tel. 081-8781428).
