Getting There

By Train -- Trains reach Speyer only by connections at Mannheim. The trip from Frankfurt takes 1 to 1 1/2 hours; from Munich, 3 1/2 to 4 hours. Call tel. 01805/996633 for schedules (11861 in Germany; www.bahn.de).

By Bus -- About one bus per hour arrives from Heidelberg. Regional service is provided by BRN Busverkehr Rhein-Neckar GmbH at Ludwigshafen (tel. 0621/12003; www.brn.de).

By Car -- You can drive from Frankfurt in about an hour, from Munich in about 4 hours. Access is by the A61 Autobahn east and west connecting with Route 9 south.

Visitor Information

For information, go to the Verkehrsamt, Maximilianstrasse 13 (tel. 06232/142392; www.speyer.de). It's open November 1 to March 31 Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, and Saturday 10am to noon; and April to October Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, Saturday 10am to 3pm, and Sunday 10am to 2pm.

Getting Around

A blue-and-white City Shuttle bus runs from the Speyer Hauptbahnhof through the town to Festplatz near the cathedral, east of the Altstadt. It connects most major hotels and restaurants. The bus comes every 10 minutes, and the service runs daily 7am to 7pm. The trip costs 1€ ($1.60).
