- The Jewish Quarter in Speyer is a site you shouldn't miss. Located along the Rhine, the Quarter is a 12th century settlement of the Jews that is now the well-preserved ruins of the once flourishing bygone era. The Jews were invited to come to this place by Bishop Rudiger Huzmann sometime in the 1080s. The more prominent features at the site are the two old synagogues, one for women and the other for men. Another one is the Judenbad or a Mikwe, which is a traditional women's bathhouse. The bathhouse has barely changed through the centuries and still fills up with groundwater. Most of the artifacts are being preserved at the Palatinate Historical Museum, but the ruins itself are an interesting visit. The ruins are only open during some times of the year, so do plan tour visit accordingly.
