Most of the best bars on St. John are centered in Cruz Bay, the island's only sizeable town. Even though they are all walking distance from each other, each has its own distinct character, from elegant martini bar to barefoot-casual beach hut.
Some of the best casual bars on St. John include The Beach Bar, Fred's, and Woody's Seafood Saloon. The Beach Bar, as the name implies, is located steps from the sand at Wharfside Village, and you can literally lie in a hammock while enjoying your cocktail and listening to live music. At Woody's, a younger crowd starts partying hearty at happy hour, and closes the place down at 2am. And on Friday and Saturday nights Fred's Patio becomes a hot spot where locals dance to ear-splitting reggae, listen to live bands, or sing karaoke.
For more refined, less raucous fun, The Caneel Bay Bar at the elegant Caneel Beach resort offers famous fruity drinks like the Cool Caneel and the trademark Plantation Punch on a terrace overlooking an amazing cove. And superb martinis are the draw at Happy Fish, a sushi restaurant that also doubles as a bar.
If you're looking for something outside Cruz Bay, try the Shipwreck Landing in Friis Bay (about a mile south of the Coral Bay junction). This lively bar/restaurant has a massive outdoor terrace that overlooks the sea and draws locals from all over the east side of the island. Skinny Legs, which is closer to the center of Coral Bay, draws a boating crowd and an eclectic collection of locals who love it for the salty atmosphere, burgers and beer.
