  • The Best of NileGuide
  • The majority of lodgings on St. John are not necessarily the conventional hotel type, as the island tends toward self-contained accommodation like condos and eco-campgrounds. So a list of the best hotels on St. John will naturally include a fair number of alternate types of lodgings.

The two "traditional" hotels on St. John also happen to be some of the classiest - and priciest - places to stay. Caneel Bay Resort, the legendary lodge founded by Laurance Rockefeller in the 1950s, is in a league of its own. The "summer camp" atmosphere is purposely spare (no technology or glitzy decor), low-key and unpretentious, but the fabulous food, seven stunning beaches and world-class views remind you that you're definitely not at camp.

The other high-end hotel is the Westin St. John, which sits atop a cliff overlooking Great Cruz Bay. Popular with families, the Westin's tropical gardens, 1/4 acre fresh water pool, watersports, restaurants, fitness center, and kids club offer enough to keep everyone thoroughly occupied -- with a price tag to match.

Gallows Point Resort and Estate Zootenvaal are two luxury condo resorts that combine the space and privacy of a condo with many of the amenities of a hotel. Gallows Point is walking distance to Cruz Bay, and the top-notch Italian resturant ZoZo's is located on site. Zootenvaal, out in Hurricane Hole, is more remote and secluded, and is ideal for those who really want to get away from it all. It's near a private snorkeling beach and just steps from the National Park boundary.

The Concordia Eco Tents and Suites in Salt Pond Bay are representative of the growing eco-friendly lodging sector on the island. These solar- and wind-powered units combine sustainable technology with spectacular views. You won't get a ton of fancy resort amenities here, but you'll be cool, comfortable, and doing something good for the environment.

On the lower-cost end, places like the Inn at Tamarind Court and the Hillcrest Guest House offer cheerful but no-frills rooms that have all the charm of St. John without the luxury price tag.
