Bankovskii Most ('Bank' Bridge)

Description:

  • This suspension bridge is 20.2 meters long and only 1.85 meters (6 feet 1 inch) wide crossing Kanal Griboedova not far from Kazan Cathedral. The bridge took its name from the building of the former Assignation Bank&emdash;now the St. Petersburg University of Economics and Finance. Built for pedestrians only in 1826. Four griffons perch on the bridge's piers, resplendent with their lions' bodies and wings of gold. Protruding iron lamps form the griffons' heads and intricate railings adorn the bridge.
