- The city of Gatchina is most famous for housing the Gatchina Palace: an 18th-century estate and park ensemble featuring romantic landscaped gardens. Under architect Antonio Rinaldi, construction began in 1766 and finished in 1781, with expansions and rennovations occuring in the 1790s. The estate housed most of the Royal family over the years, including Tsar Nicholas II, who spent much of his childhood there. The Palace, Venus Pavilion and Birch Cottage all house exhibitions. The pavilions are closed from September to May. Closed first Tuesday of each month.
