The heart of the ensemble is The Field of Mars itself, named after the Roman god of war. It got this name because military parades and training exercises were held there in Peter the Great's time. Marsovo Pole covers an area of 25 acres and is a popular summer hang-out. An eternal flame dedicated to the revolution still burns in the middle of the park.
