Mining Institute

Mining Institute - St. Petersburg

  • Description:

    • Founded in 1773, the institute is the first of its kind in all Europe. It's located on Vasilievskii Island on the bend of the embankment. The yellow building, designed by Voronkhin between 1806-1811, has an impressive portico, twelve solid white Doric columns, and a sculpture of 'Hercules and Antaeus' and 'The Rape of the Persephone' lining the steps. The interesting bit about the Institute is that it possesses an engaging museum, but call before going. You will only be allowed in with an appointment and then you will be able to see massive pieces of malachite, beryl, topaz and quartz. There are also healthy pieces of petrified wood, shells and amazing cut stones. Entry by appointment.
