  • NileGuide Expert Says:

This wind-swept island give the same sense of isolation today as it must have during the days when it served as a prison.

  • Description:

    • Shlisselburg (earlier Oreshek) fortress is a unique architectural and historic monument, situated on an island in the estuary of Neva. It was established in 1323 and played a very important role in Russia's history. In 1612 Sweden captured Oreshek and ruled over it for 90 years. In 1702 Peter the Great recaptured the fortress and renamed it to Shlisselburg (Key Town). Since 1702 to 1917 it was a political prison, where members of royal family, members of revolutionary movement and different writers had been kept. During World War Two, a 500-man garrison defended Oreshek and it didn't fall to the enemy.
