- Dvortsovaya (Palace) Square The Palace Square ensemble is of great historical I architectural value and takes up an important place in 1 spatial composition of central Petersburg.Several generations of outstanding architects had been working on the ensemble for several centuries. ^^ Palace Square came into being in the middle of the 18th century, when the Winter Palace was put up (1754—62), C.Rossi contributed greatly to the formation of J Palace Square ensemble. In 1819—29 he put up the grand building of the General Staff here, in place of the he built in the 1780s. He also erected the building hoi the Ministries, uniting the two structures into a single whole by a grand triumphal arch thrown across Bolshj Morskaya Street. In 1837—43 the architect Briullov put up the build! of the Guards Corps Headquarters, that gave shape to the eastern side of the square, and in 1846 the corner part the General Staff building facing Nevsky Prospekt
