NileGuide Expert Says:
Sestroresk is now a booming 'upscale bedroom community' home to some of the city's most popular coastline shashlik (kebab) restaurants. On the weekends Petersburgers flood out of the city in search of fresher air and relaxation here.
Description:
- This resort-town is situated in one of the most picturesque places on the North coast of the Gulf of Finland. It gets its name from the Sestra (Sister), a river running nearby. Peter the Great established the town together with its armoury in 1714. The country-side palace and its beautiful garden were designed by Peter's decree. Legend has it that Peter himself planted the first oaks. The palace was destroyed in 1781, but the park 'Dubki' (Little Oaks) is still a favorite spot for those seeking rest or quiet perambulation.
