- Cathedral of the Smolny Convent is a wonderful example of the Russian baroque. It was designed by Rastrelli. Elizabeth I intended it as her home in her older years. It was later a school for young noble ladies. The name comes from the Russian word for tar which was found there and used for shipbuilding.
