It depends on what class and what train you're going to travel. St. Peterburg - Moscow tickets start from 15 euro. To check prices in roubles and buy electronic tickets you can here http://rzd.ru/ It's official site of Russian Railways. They have English version as I know.

Hey Hans!
Last summer we had the same trip we traveled by the 3rd class in the middle of June so the total cost was 35 euro St Petersburg - Moscow - Kiew.
You can buy e-tickets directly from Russian rail train here http://www.ticket.rzd.ru/wps/portal/pp but as I know English edition is not ready yet. Btw train tickets are available only 45 days before your departure.
Make sure if you need Ukranian visa. And you will be delighted by Kiew! Such an amazing and cheap city. Suway costed 0,07 euro! But I heart that now prices are a bit higher :)

Hi, you have already the web of the railway( http://rzd.ru/ - it's the best and the most easy way to buy tickets). Just some advise. You can by cheaper tickets if you take the train during the day, for exaple from St.Petersburg to Moscow the tickets can be around 800 rubles (but sitting places), also there is a New train - around 4 hours and you in Moscow - 2406 1 way cost. From Moscow to Kiev - the prices from 1100 -...

Hello, Hans!

Check this link!
But actually I would agree with Robert and advise you to buy tickets at the station. The passengers who purchased tickets online get only the reservation confirmation or smth as far as I know and therefore have to go and get the actual tickets in the box office! Moreover they have no priority and have to stand in line with all other passengers.
So it does not save your time.

Hi Hans,
The prices depend very much on when you travel.
Each leg will cost you between 1000RUR and 5000RUR depending on time, date, class etc (approximately €25 - €125). If you plan to travel at a peak time you may have to book in advance.
You can buy your ticket online, there are several sites, but I would buy at the station in Saint Petersburg if I were you (Moskovsky Vokzal Ploschad Vosstania 2, just off Nevsky Prospekt - Metro: Ploschad Vosstania).
Have a good trip and let us all know how you get on.

Thanks everybody for your help. I'll buy the tickets in St. Petersburg. I didn't really understand the site rzd.ru, i couldn't get to the ticket reservation or time tables.
But, I did find a nice Dutch site with the right information: http://rzd.rusland-desk.nl/default.asp. You can make reservations there (only if you're Dutch, I guess), but you can also find out the available trains, prices and even free seats. And, the site is also available in English and German.
