Go and see the Nut cracker at Mariinsky theatre. It is the most Christmas show of all.

Everywhere is safe for foreigners, don't worry, just be careful.
There are still a lot of people about, go to different cafes, restuarants, ice skating, these are all good places to meet people and have fun. Walk in the park, stoke some dogs - you can always meet people that way.
In the evenings there are clubs and bars as well.
I don't want to be specific because you may not like what/who I like but there IS a lot to do and a lot still going on.

Vyborg is only 1hr:40min away or 2hr:30min in you take the slow train. There is lots to do an see in Vyborg. If you go to the castle look out for Galina and her Sava (Sova is Russian for Owl). Galina's Sova is call 'Sherman', they are both very friendly.

Which ice rink do you prefer Natasha? I have been to all the rinks in Saint Petersburg and this is my favorite: Ice Rink in 'ON' - address is пр-т Обуховской Обороны, д.120, лит.Б. Here is the map: http://www.on-centr.ru/images/stories/Map_ispr.gif Inside ON: После входа повернуть налево, дойти до конца, повернуть направо. (На полу есть указатели.)
