St. Thomas has a long tradition of romantic restaurants that offer vacationing couples an intimate setting, memorable food, and memories to savor long after they return home. It may sound cliché, but most of the St. Thomas (and St. John) restaurants that rate highly on the romance meter have a magical combination of harbor view, fine wine, and low-light low-noise ambiance.
Though romance is a subjective notion, Blue Moon Cafe (in the East End) is arguably the most seductive spot on the island. If the breezy open-air setting and spectacular sunsets over Secret Harbor Beach don't put you in the mood, then the zesty, inventive tropical food will. Wine Spectator magazine honored the restaurant twice for having the most romantic setting in St. Thomas, and the New York Times raved about it too, so the Blue Moon must be doing something right.
Spots like Banana Tree Grille, Mafolie, and Room With a View (whose name gives it away) offer views over Charlotte Amalie Harbor that can't be beat while dining a deux at night. Banana Tree Grille and Room With a View are both on top of Bluebeard's Hill and feature international cuisine in an intimate setting. Mafolie, which is halfway up the island's highest peak, offers a tantalizing array of fresh seafood, steaks, chicken and vegetarian dishes along with its magnificent views.
On the north side of the island, overlooking the Mahogany Run golf course, the Old Stone Farm House harks back to a different era. Set in an old sugar plantation building that dates back to the 1750's, the eclectic international menu is paired with fine wines and a rustic atmosphere complete with exposed stone walls, candlelight and fancy table linens.
The most romantic place in Frenchtown is without a doubt the Oceana Restaurant and Wine Bar, which features fresh seafood and meats expertly prepared, as well as a good selection of imported wines. The wine bar area is separate from the dining room, whose candles and oil lamps flicker amid bouquets of flowers.
St. John has its share of romance as well. Rhumblines is an alfresco restaurant that has been renovated to reflect the comfort and ambiance of a well-appointed South Seas home, while at Zozo's Ristorante in Gallows Point Resort you can watch the sun set over the water while feeding each other calamari and gnocchi.
