The Best of NileGuide
-
The natural beauty and diversity of St. Thomas translates into an endless list of things to do. The best activities revolve around ocean and water sports, but the dining, shopping, golf, sightseeing, and aquarium are also top notch.
St. Thomas is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, including Magens Bay and Lindqvist Beach for sun tanning, and Secret Harbor for amazingly clear snorkeling. While Magens is often crowded with tourists during peak season, it is worth visiting because of its sheer size and perfect tropical setting, complete with fine white sand and rustling palms. Secret Harbor is small but pretty, with huge schools of tropical fish found near the rocks at each end of the cove. And Lindqvist offers quiet, secluded bliss, with no loud bars, daredevil jet-skiers or crowds to spoil your day. If you don't mind going a little further afield, Water Island can be explored on foot or on bike, and it features the stunning Honeymoon Beach.
Historical sightseeing is abundant on St. Thomas, with Fort Christian and the 99 Steps topping the list of Danish colonial attractions. Also worth a look are Bluebeard's or Blackbeard's castles, two lookout towers built in the 1600's, both of which were reputed to be pirates' lairs. And Drake's Seat is the best spot for panoramic views that stretch all the way to the British Virgin Islands and beyond.
The best activities for kids include the Paradise Point Skyride, which offers more great views, or the colorful marine life at Coral World Ocean Park, to name but a few.
And last but not least is shopping. Duty-free loot is abundant in Charlotte Amalie (and Havensight), with the best bargains being alcohol, jewelry, perfume, electronics, fine china and crystal. AH Riise and Diamonds International are but two of the hundreds of shops that offer tax- and duty-free bargains at a fraction of the price of the mainland.
