Description:

  • Formerly a peninsula that jutted into Charlotte Amalie harbor, this tiny island was once a hub of seafaring activity and has history which dates back to Napoleonic times. Guided hiking and kayaking tours allow visitors to see the ruins of an 18th century stone fort, a 19th century marine railway, and the crumbling remains of the Royal Mail Steam Packet company. More recently, the Royal Mail Inn, a small hotel located on the island, is alleged to have been the inspiration for the hotel in Herman Wouk's novel Don't Stop the Carnival.
