Description:

  • The beach at Vessup Bay is only a half-mile from the tourist hubbub of Red Hook, but it's barely used by tourists at all. This beautiful white ribbon of sand is undeveloped and usually only sparsely populated, except on weekends when locals come to barbecue and hang out. The water is calm and perfect for swimming, or for watersports, which can be rented on weekends only at the West Indies Windsurfing concession. There is a bar near the longer section of beach (Latitude 18), and adequate parking. To get to Vessup, follow route 32 (Smith Bay Road) south out of Red Hook, turn left at route 322, then turn left again at Vessup Drive. Follow signs to Latitude 18, which leads you to the left again down a horrible dirt road. Vessup Beach is at the end.
