This is where the St-Tropez party scene breaks for dinner. Let's be truthful: The Italian cuisine here hardly ranks with the best you've ever had. In fact, it's not even close. But the "action" of patrons makes for the most amusing dinner in town. First, the place looks like Hugh Hefner designed it for his Playboy Mansion. Every night is an unofficial "fashion show." Tycoons, wannabes, tabloid celebrities, and yachties dine here in the location behind place des Lices, uphill from the port in the commercial heart of town, close to the nightclub, Les Caves du Roy.
As each new party enters, diners look to see what the guests are wearing. Or not wearing in some cases. You can learn secrets here -- say, which famous patrons opt out of wearing certain pieces of clothing the majority of us find essential. Observe how well-known personalities praise the same food you just ordered. When we went, it seemed a particular Italophile celebrity enjoyed the grilled calamari and the beef filet with summer truffles more than we did. We think your best bet is one of the homemade pastas or the catch of the day. In summer wear your skimpiest attire (that goes for both men and women).
