This is one of the most unassuming and unpretentious restaurants in the Winelands, yet it has a loyal following of locals -- wine magazine editors and wine farmers included -- who appreciate the informal atmosphere; unfussy, delicious food; great wine list; and excellent service (this is one place where most of the waiters really know their wines). The menu changes every 6 months (with fresh and seasonal menu changes daily), but established favorites include Karoo shoulder of lamb; fresh Saldanha Bay mussels; duck pie; seared Norwegian salmon, served with a miso sauce on a vermicelli-noodle stir-fry; and the legendary dry-aged steaks -- a house favorite being the hollandaise pepper fillet. In season, bookings need to be made weeks in advance.
