Opposite the Royal Palace, this is the most famous and unashamedly luxurious restaurant in Sweden. Its lavishly elegant decor, style, and service are reminiscent of a royal court banquet at the turn of the 20th century. Its other claim to fame: It turned Stockholmers into serious foodies. Its promise of a world-class French-inspired cuisine has lured us back time and time again, although we dread facing the final bill. The house specialties are impeccable. Many come here for the elaborate fixed-price menus; others prefer the classic Swedish dishes or the modern French ones. A house specialty that's worth the trip is the platter of northern delicacies, with everything from smoked eel to reindeer, along with Swedish red caviar. Salmon and game, including grouse from the northern forests, are prepared in various ways. There's a cigar room too. If you attend, dress as if you were facing Joan Rivers on the red carpet -- and it's Oscar night.
