Exploring Stockholm's Archipelago

Exploring Stockholm's Archipelago

Description:

Water, islands and wildlife all within an hour of the city; this is Stockholm's Archipelago. Many Stockholm locals own summer houses on the islands of the archipelago, as they provide for a relaxing repose from the bustle of city. Make like a local and start exploring and discovering the calmer side of Stockholm life.

Day Note:

To get an initial taste of the archipelago, embark on a day cruise with Tusen Öars Kryssning. This will give a good introduction to the beauty and diversity that makes the Stockholm Archipelago unique.

    Description:

This day cruise on the century-old M/S Waxholm III has become a great success. If it's sunny, you'll get a nice tan. Known as the Thousand Island Cruise, it is no exaggeration. The Stockholm archipelago consists of more than 24,000 islands, and no visit to the city is complete without a trip to the numerous islands. It would actually take a lot more than a day's cruise to see the entire archipelago, but the cruise makes quite a few interesting stops. In addition to the magnificent view of the beautiful archipelago, you can also enjoy excellent food and beverages onboard. Tours are conducted in Swedish and English.

    Description:

In the 9th Century, Birka was a busy trading metropolis where the Benedictine monk Ansgar was sent by Emperor Frank to convert the Nordic heathens. A visit to this island will reveal the ongoing excavations, and you'll be able to explore the recently inaugurated museum. Guided tours are arranged, which gives you a detailed information on the excavations. You may also get a glimpse of one of the Viking ships, a reconstruction of the ancient seafarers' vessels.

Day Note:

Vaxholm is one of the most popular islands in the Stockholm Archipelago; in the summer it fills with Stockholmites who want to spend the warmer months outside of the city. From here you can take a ferry to get to Vaxholms Fästning, an old fortress. After a morning of exploring Vaxholm, ferry over to Grinda Wärdshus, where you can spend several days exploring the island and relaxing in simple archipelago style.

    Our Local Expert Says:

With no telephones or TV in the rooms, this is a true oasis away from the beat of city life.

    Description:

This cozy, small inn on the island of Grinda (30 kilometers from Stockholm) offers beautiful island accommodations. Its restaurant is excellent and the neighboring, picturesque island is also well worth a visit. Active guests tend to stay at this hotel as one can swim, hire a boat or a canoe, and do other outdoor stuff on the island. There are no roads to this island, so guests rely on the Waxholmsbolaget or the Cinderella boat to reach city centre. If you arrive on your own boat, you can have access to moorings in the marina.
