  • With an enviable lifestyle, superlative weather and a stunning physical setting, few places demand as much active, outdoor immersion as Australia's oldest city. Take a dip in North Sydney pool in the shadows of the Harbor Bridge, watch whales frolic in a secluded inlet, hop on a ferry to Manly, then finish with a surf in the Pacific just in time for lunch.
    Iconic landmarks - that levitating bridge, that beach, that Opera House with its wings spread like a giant white swan taking flight - make you feel like you've arrived in the most exciting city on earth.
    Climb the bridge (like Oprah did), feed sharks at Sydney Aquarium, or wander along the edge of the continent on the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk. Much of the northern harbor foreshore is a protected national park; perfect for exploring or picnicking.
    Or, for a decidedly different and surprising take on the city from the water, try turning west out of Circular Quay and under the bridge (instead of east to Manly) on board a Parramatta RiverCat.
    Then there's Sydney's rich indigenous history. The Royal Botanical Gardens, on the eastern fringe of the CBD, conducts specialized walking tours by indigenous education officers. Participants explore plant uses, culture, artefacts, and also get to taste some bush tucker foods at the tour's completion.
