North Sydney: Sydney

The Lower North Shore is a place of wealth, privilege and natural beauty. Centred around the unremarkable centres of Chatswood, and North Sydney (a little warren of skyscrapers adjacent to the rather-more-impressive Sydney CBD) these suburbs grew very quickly after the Bridge first spanned Sydney Harbour in 1932, spurred by the short and simple commute times the bridge made possible, and the acres of freehold land as yet unpopulated.

Suburbs of note include Mosman (home to the Taronga Zoo), Kirribilli (the suburb which contains the Sydney homes of the Prime Minister of Australia, along with the Governor-General), and Milson's Point (whose Blues Point park contains perhaps the most spectacular skyline views in Sydney - come with a picnic at dusk).

Perhaps the best known of the Lower-North Shore suburbs is Manly. A great way to see some of Sydney Harbour is to catch the Manly Ferry, a Sydney institution. This ferry travels from Circular Quay to Manly, and takes about half an hour. Avoid traveling between 7am and 8.30am and 5pm and 7pm when the ferries are packed solid with commuters.
