Description:

  • Lake George, the largest body of fresh water in Australia, is trapped in its internal drainage basin between two arms of the Great Dividing Range. When full, Lake George is seven meters (22 feet) deep and covers more than 900 square kilometers (347 square miles). At these times, it becomes home to many waterbirds. However, in more usual dry periods, vegetation grows in the lake bed, fences are exposed and it becomes pasture for sheep and cattle. A large section of the Federal Highway between Goulburn and Canberra passes Lake George, providing fantastic photograph opportunities. Parking areas are provided at intervals overlooking the lake.
