Built by the residents after the flood that destroyed the city, this church sits in a square that is exactly the same size as Saint Mark Square in Venice. In the church is an unusual representation of the Madonna created in mosaic by Ferenc Márton over the baldachin of the high altar. Nicknamed the "Madonna in a fur coat," because she is depicted wearing a richly decorated fur coat, typical of this region, with red slippers typical of Szeged. There are many magnificent pieces of artwork throughout the church. It houses Europe's third largest church organ with 9,040 pipes. Mass is held here at 6:30am, 7:30am, and 6pm every day.
Also on the square is the oldest historic monument of the city: the Saint Demetrius Tower with a foundation dating back to the 11th century. The lower, squared roman styled section and early gothic upper sections are dated to the 13th century.
