Description:
Dale Chihuly's work inspired the construction of this museum, which travels far and wide to bring the very best art glass to Tacoma. A vast variety of glass artworks is featured in the galleries of this high-style building on the waterfront: Whether it's stained glass in the style of Tiffany, a traveling exhibit from a European museum, or the latest thought-provoking installation by a cutting-edge glass artist, you'll find it here. The highlight is the hot shop, a huge cone-shaped studio space where visitors can watch glass artists work at several kilns. Connecting the museum to the rest of the city is the 500-foot-long Chihuly Bridge of Glass, which spans the I-705 freeway. Adjacent to this museum at 1821 E. Dock St. are the William Traver Gallery (tel. 253/383-3685; www.travergallery.com) and Vetri International Glass (tel. 253/383-3692; www.vetriglass.com), which are outposts of Seattle's William Traver Gallery, the most highly respected art-glass gallery in the region.
