Taipei is home to some of the best Chinese restaurants around, and what most visitors may not realize is the huge diversity of cuisine styles that fall under the Chinese umbrella. From dim sum to hot pot to Peking duck, eating at one of the best Chinese restaurants in Taipei means you're eating very well.
Start your culinary tour with some local Taiwanese comfort food at Shin Yeh. The extensive menu of finger foods and traditional favorites gives you a taste of Taipei's food culture in a lively and laid-back atmosphere.
When you think Chinese food, Peking duck probably comes to mind, and Celestial restaurant is known throughout Taiwan for serving some of the best roasted Beijing duck outside of Beijing. You may have to fight the hordes of tourists who stop here, but the crispy duck skin, warm meat, and tangy hoisin make it worth your while.
It would be a shame to leave Taipei without trying hot pot, and at Mala Yuanyang Hot Pot, you can select your own ingredients to cook at your table at the all-you-can-eat buffet. If you want to brave the spicy version but feel hesitant, have no fear. At Mala you can divide your hot pot into two to three different broths to fit every taste at your table.
The term "best" doesn't always equal "elegant," and while the Shilin Night Market may seem an unlikely addition to the list, the street stalls here cook up Chinese and Taiwanese foods that rival any of Taipei's luxury restaurants in taste. Look for the long lines to find the best stuff, and don't be afraid to really indulge. Prices are cheap enough that you can feast on a few dollars.
