Shopping in Taipei

From souvenirs to name brand accessories, Taipei is a veritable ocean of shopping places. Whether you're window shopping, filling out your wardrobe, or getting a head start on holiday gift purchases, you'll certainly find what you're looking for in one of the many malls, markets, or shopping districts of Taiwan's capital city. These ten shopping destinations are just a few to be found in Taipei, a shopper's paradise.

You can find huge mega-malls all over the world, and while Taipei has its share of them, one of the best shopping experiences to be had is in the open-air Shilin Night Market. You'll smell the alluring aromas of street food vendors hawking their wares while browsing shops and stalls full of anything your heart could desire. The place gets packed, and it can be an assault on your senses, but it's an experience not to be missed in Taipei.

Mall rats will rejoice at Taipei's assortment of humongous shopping centers, and one of the biggest is right inside the Taipei 101. The first five floors of the world's second tallest building are home to some of the best high-end shopping in the city. If you get hungry from all that purchasing, the basement has a sizable food court and grocery store with everything from western delis to Taiwanese dumpling shops.

Taiwan, like China, is known for jade, and each weekend the city plays host to a jade market selling everything from bangles to small Buddha statues. While not the all-in-one shopping experience like Taipei 101, travelers looking for that uniquely Taipei souvenir may find just what they're looking for.

There are plenty of shops to keep you busy for weeks in Taipei proper, but you'll find some interesting local handicrafts and knick-knacks in the quaint shops lining the main wharf area of Danshui township, just a short train ride from Taipei. The area offers a more leisurely shopping experience away from the hustle and bustle of the capital.
