- About 40 minutes from Taipei Main Station by MRT lies the small, sleepy seaside town of Danshui. Surrounded by scenic mountains, rivers, and coastline, a day trip to the village gives visitors not only a breath of fresh air (literally) but a look at a more traditional Taiwan. Pay a visit to the Dutch Hongmao castle, built in 1641, or stroll along the old street and fisherman's wharf, where you'll find plenty of stores selling local handicrafts.
The fisherman's wharf has seen several chic coffee shops pop up in the last few years, as well as several expensive seafood restaurants. For a bit of local flavor, order A-Gei, a tofu dish stuffed with glass noodles and covered in hot sauce.
