NileGuide Expert tip:
Take your photos through the glass of the indoor observation deck on the 89th floor.
The Taipei 101 Observatory is quite touristy, but there's simply no better spot in Taipei to take in stunning panoramic views. While you can't claim to have visited the tallest building in the world anymore, as the Burj Khalifa in Dubai overtook Taipei 101 in 2010, you'll still be atop the second tallest building.
Ride the Guinness world record-holding high-speed elevator from the fifth floor all the way to the 89th in 37 seconds.
Upon arrival at the observation deck, you can pick up a free audio tour headset and listen to some history and trivia as you wander. If you're the cheesy, romantic type, you can write and mail a postcard to your love from the world's highest mailbox, as of 2004.
Keep your eye on the weather forecast, and head to Taipei 101 on a clear, not-too-windy day. You may be able to visit the 91st floor outdoor observatory, where you can view the surrounding city from 508 meters in the air. Don't plan on stellar photo ops from outside, however. The outdoor deck is lined with high-security prison-style bars and chest-high walls that obstruct the view from your viewfinder.
