• This outdoor night market is famed for its nightly eating frenzy in Keelung, even attracting city dwellers from Taipei. Packed full of food stalls, popular items to try are tempura, peanut butter ice sorbet and tang yuan, (white chewy rice balls filled with sweet sesame seed paste floating in sweet soup). More recently, this port town's biggest culinary claim to fame is the hero sandwich, consisting of sliced ham, boiled eggs, cucumbers and tomatoes wedged between a deep-fried baguette. You can find similar sandwiches in Taipei where vendors boast they make them just the way the folks do in Keelung!
