Church of the Holy Ghost

Description:

  • Church of the Holy Ghost is one of Tallinn's oldest churches, and the only sacred building that preserved its original form. It was built in the 1630s and still retains its original exterior, except for the Baroque spire. The church played a key role in Estonia's history. The tower bell dating back to 1433 was damaged by fire, yet still remains the oldest one in Tallinn. On the facade there is a painted clock, which is considered the oldest timekeeper in Estonia. Inside, there is a Gothic-style wooden sculpture. The church is also the home of a precious piece of medieval work; an altar that is reveled by many and was commissioned by Berndt Notke in 1483.
