Description:

  • The gray-granite Tampere cathedral, built between 1902 and 1907, is the finest example of the Finnish National Romantic style. The towering spires and the piers holding up the vaulting evoke the Gothic style of the Middle Ages, but the stunning interior is one of the best examples in Finland of Art Nouveau. The cathedral contains many pieces of art, including The Wounded Angel and The Garden of Death by Hugo Simberg (1873-1917). The artist was the most famous Symbolist in Finland, and his style is best evoked by the large murals The Garland Bearers.
