Description:
The ancestry of the three young owners of Dar Jameel reads like a travelogue: Poland, Syria, India, and the Berber heartlands of Morocco. Between them, Stefan, Talib, and Driss have pumped new life into this 150-year-old house and now easily host Tangier's funkiest medina maison d'hôte, only a short walk from the port entrance. Dar Jameel comprises five levels surrounding a covered central courtyard. The lower floors have been kept in their original style with exquisitely carved stucco breaking up the pinks, blues, and greens of the walls and doors, Iraqi glass windows, and a black-and-white-tile floor. The bedrooms are in pastel colors and are simply furnished -- some with a four-poster bed, others with a small, low-lying lounge; some also have a private bathroom. An iron staircase and railing winds its way up (there are lots of stairs here) to the newer section of the house, where you'll find plenty of communal chill-out space in keeping with the Moroccan-Indian influences. The bottom half of a split-level roof terrace offers more resting, reading, and sunbathing space, while the watchtower-like top level affords 360-degree views from its enclosed lounge and is the place to watch the sunset. Dinner can be arranged with the in-house kitchen for groups of six and larger only.
