Description:
Twelve kilometers (19 miles) from Tela on the eastern end of Tela bay, Punta Izopa has a similar ecosystem to Jeanette Kawas, yet is far less visited. Here the Platáno and Hicaque rivers empty into the ocean in a maze of canals and lagoons sheltered by mangroves. The diverse bionetwork harbors caimans, manatees, turtles, monkeys, and a long list of avian life. The reserve is best explored by kayak. Garífuna Tours (tel. 504/448-2904; www.garifunatours.com) and most other Tela tour operators regularly lead trips here using top kayaks. The cost is about L475 to L570 ($25-$30/£13-£15) per person. You can also recruit boatmen in Triunfo de la Cruz (just west of the park), though you will need to get a group together to make it worthwhile.
