Description:
This is the sort of place threatened by overpopularity and subsequent development of former backwaters like Vernazza: an exceedingly basic but clean and cheap hotel in an absolutely stellar location, in the center of the tiny harbor piazza with views over the fishing boats and Mediterranean. This pleasant, bare-bones pensione on the two upper floors of a tall old house on the waterfront is at the top of four flights of broad stone steps (63 of 'em), and from there, many of the rooms are reached by an additional climb up a ladderlike spiral staircase. These efforts are rewarded by an eagle's-eye view of Vernazza's harbor from some rooms, and a partial view in others. Accommodations, though basic, are not without charm -- there's a pleasant smattering of homey furniture, cool tile floors, and a sink. If no one answers the buzzer, step across the square to the Taverna del Capitano restaurant to ask about one of their rooms.
