The Galei Kinneret, hidden from the main road by gardens, is the oldest of the quality hotels in town (it was a favorite of Ben-Gurion) and is a place for Israelis to see and be seen. It was heavily renovated in 1997, but the old standards and personality of the hotel still continue. The original building from the early 1940s is of severe white International-Style design, to which newer wings have been added. The general atmosphere is relaxing; unlike other downtown hotels, the Galei Kinneret has shaded lawns and its own beach directly on the lake. Public areas and guest rooms are comfortable but not spectacular. The pool is heated and covered in winter. Gemultlich as a semi-Bauhaus Israeli resort can be, this is a cultural and historic oddity, but unless you are from the Israeli Establishment, it could fall flat. Full or half board is often required.
