These 19th-century stone buildings in the heart of downtown Tiberias have been hidden behind high walls and overgrown gardens for more than a century, serving originally as a hospital run by the Church of Scotland and later as an atmospheric but very simple hostel and guesthouse. In 2004, the management renovated the entire romantic enclave. The result is a charming hotel with lots of character and sparkling new guest rooms, carefully planned and offering all the modern conveniences. There are two categories of rooms: standard and the slightly more expensive "antique" rooms that make dramatic use of arched ceilings, exposed basalt walls, and other original architectural details. Other pluses are beautiful, secluded gardens with sweeping vistas of the lake and Tiberias; a pool; a private beach; and a friendly staff. Booked by both tour groups and individual travelers of all faiths, this is a real gem, and the prettiest hotel in Tiberias. Dining facilities are not kosher.
