Tioman accommodation options were limited to the large Berjaya Resort and simple chalets until the stylish boutique hotel JapaMala opened in 2004. Located on the southwest side of the island, the hotel has its own remote beach and jungle, and is in an area that's protected from monsoon winds. A member of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux group, JapaMala has rooms that are fashionably rustic and range from seaview to treetop chalets amid ancient rainforests. The hotel has five-star luxe facilities, pearly white sands, and clear waters most of the year. Guests arriving by air need to transfer to the resort via private speedboat at a fee, and those arriving from Mersing on the mainland can catch a fast speedboat that takes approximately 1 1/2 hours, depending upon the prevailing weather.
