• This place has been the stuff of legends -- and the verdict is still out as to whether it's the source of inspiration for the Eagles' song of the same name. A few years back it was a dilapidated guesthouse, but after an extensive renovation, it's now the hippest place to stay in the area. Think Philippe Stark in the desert -- the decor here is a fusion of jewel-tone colors with eclectic Mexican and Moroccan accents. Each room features a different decor, but all of it is high style, with rich hues and captivating details. Most rooms also offer an outdoor terrace or seating area. It's so stylishly accommodating that although you can check out anytime you want, you may not want to! On the ground floor, you'll find the lobby, the low-lit library -- with deep blue walls, a profusion of candles, and tin stars -- as well as a small outdoor pool with sun chairs. Also at ground level is the Emporio boutique, which is well worth a visit for its rugs, jewelry, and glass lanterns; the La Coronela Restaurant and Bar (open daily 7am-11pm) is the nocturnal hot spot, with live guitar, jazz, and blues on Saturday evenings. Its Tequila Bar is a small, decadently decorated spot, with red and black settees, and an extensive selection of tequilas, including their own Hotel California label.
