Anritsuji Temple

Description:

  • Buried in the graveyard of this tiny temple is the eclectic artist, Kanzan Shimomura (1873-1930), a man who was pivotal in revamping the Japan Fine Arts Academy in 1914. Shimomura studied in Britain in 1903-1905 and was designated an Imperial Household Artist in 1917. He was a partner and friend of artist Taikan Yokoyama and a student of Hogai Kano, whose grave can be found in the nearby Choanji Temple. Some of Shimomura's art is on display in the Yokoyama Taikan Memorial Hall.
