• The Araki hot spring was discovered 200 years ago by a female forebear of the current owner, who learned of its existence in a dream. The water is sodium hydrogen-carbonate with sulfur, water has a sulfur smell, a greenish-yellow color, and a slimy feel to it. Perversely, the best hot springs are often the ones that are least appealing in terms of color, smell, and texture. Araki Kosen has large wooden tubs for indoor bathing with separate facilities for men and women. The inn serves good food. Especially tasty are its dishes combining mountain vegetables and wild boar.
