Festival of the Rooster

Description:

  • Many Shinto shrines hold a lively festival on the days of the rooster in accordance with the old Chinese-modeled Japanese calendar to pray for abundant agricultural harvest and prosperity throughout the year. The shrines are awash with lights and vendors sell variations of the kumade (bear claws) which are bamboo rakes decorated with Japanese good luck symbols like masks, fake gold coins, and miniature treasure chests. The most popular shrine for the Tori no Ichi Festival is the Ootori Shrine in Asakusa which attracts tens of thousands of visitors. Date: Varies with calendar (call for details)
