Description:
- The monks of the Yakuoin Temple (founded in 744) test the endurance of their souls (and soles) by walking barefoot on five meters of burning coals while chanting incantations for the safety of families and society. This unusual religious event takes place annually on the second Sunday of May at Kotsu Anzen Kitosho Plaza at the foot of Mount Takao. The fascinating "spectacle" attracts both worshipers and the curious; some are not satisfied with just being a spectator and try to walk on the hot coal themselves. Admission is free.
